As a Black woman with natural hair, when my curls started to fall out from postpartum hair loss I felt totally overwhelmed; it was devastating.
One day your curls feel full, the next you’re noticing shedding, thinning edges, or more hair in your shower drain on washday than usual.
If you’re experiencing this, you’re not alone. Postpartum shedding is both common—and temporary. Let’s start with some definitions.
What Is Postpartum Hair Loss?
Postpartum hair loss, also known as telogen effluvium, is a temporary shedding phase that happens after pregnancy.
During pregnancy, higher estrogen levels keep hair in the growth phase longer, which can lead to thicker, fuller hair.
After giving birth, hormone levels drop—and all the hair that was “on hold” begins to shed at once.
This typically starts around 2 to 4 months postpartum. For me it was 4 months PP to the letter. 😅
How Long Does Postpartum Shedding Last?
Most postpartum hair shedding lasts between 3 to 6 months, though for some it can continue up to a year.
The key thing to understand: this is your natural hair growth cycle resetting—not permanent hair loss.
Can You Stop Postpartum Hair Loss?
You can’t completely stop postpartum shedding, but you can support healthy hair growth and minimize breakage while your hair recovers.
How to Support Hair Growth After Pregnancy
1. Prioritize scalp health
Healthy hair growth starts at the scalp. Keep it clean, balanced, and supported. That means washing weekly and using a moisturizing deep conditioning mask every wash day like our Shine & Moisture Mask.
2. Stick to low-manipulation styles
Loose, protective styles help reduce tension and prevent unnecessary breakage. Especially when you don’t have a lot of time with new baby around, keep the styling routine to a simple twistout or braidout.
3. Use lightweight, nutrient-rich oils
Ingredients like argan oil and sage help support circulation without weighing hair down.
4. Focus on moisture and length retention
Hydrated hair is less prone to breakage, which helps you keep the length you have.
5. Stay consistent
Hair growth takes time. Consistency will always outperform doing the most.

Signs of Postpartum Hair Regrowth
As shedding slows, you may notice:
- Short hairs or “baby hairs” along your hairline
- Changes in curl pattern or texture
- Fuller density returning over time
This is new hair growth after pregnancy—not damage.
When to Seek Support
If shedding continues beyond a year postpartum or feels excessive, consider speaking with a healthcare provider to rule out factors like iron or other nutrient deficiencies or thyroid changes.
Postpartum Hair Care, Simplified
Postpartum is not the time for a complicated routine. Because as new mamas, we have no time!

Hair growth after pregnancy is already happening—your role is to support it, not force it.
Postpartum hair loss can feel like a setback, but it’s actually a transition. Your hair is entering a new growth cycle.
